NEWS (April 4, 2014): Bicycle Solutions is pleased to welcome Diane Serafini, a long-time colleague who is an experienced instructor of adults and children.
Diane is based in San Francisco and -- like John -- will be most available there.  However, she will be available for lessons at all 4 of our locations.
Having Diane on board will enable us to expand our availability especially on weekends, and to offer lessons in 2 of our locations with overlapping hours.

NOTE (April 1, 2014): John will be unavailable April 1-6, 9 & 11-27, and May 14-19.  He expects to post his remaining May availability toward the end of April.

YOUR INSTRUCTORS
John Ciccarelli (founder & owner) and Diane Serafini, League of American Bicyclists certified instructors ("LCIs").
John has offered Learn To Bicycle lessons since 2001 and has taught over 800 adults and children, age 5 to early 70s.

Diane has taught adults and children for many years in San Francisco and East Bay group classes, in public schools, and privately.

LESSONS OFFERED

  • Level 1: Learn To Bicycle At Any Age - Balancing, pedaling, turning (including figure-8s), smooth stopping, shifting gears
For adults, we provide a bicycle to learn on.  We also have 3 child bikes (16", 20" and 24" wheel sizes) that we can bring to lessons in San Francisco and sometimes to the Peninsula.

  • Level 2: Bicycle Handling Skills Clinic - Riding with improved control; precise starting and stopping, shifting your line of travel; scanning over your shoulder; hand signals; negotiating lane changes, handling simple intersections.
We'll begin the lesson in an off-street practice area, and transition to nearby simple streets and intersections if time permits.
Bring your own bicycle, or let us know that you'll need to use ours

  • Level 3: Ride-Along Coaching - A "teaching ride" to practice bicycle driving on a route of your choice, with stops for demonstrations and discussion.
You'll ride your own bike; we'll accompany you on ours

  • Custom coaching - Expert assistance on whatever you'd like to improve. Some examples:
Starting/stopping, descending or climbing steep hills, specific control issues, commuting to middle school or high school, buying a bike.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

  • WHAT IF I DON'T SEE A DATE AND TIME THAT WORKS FOR ME?
We often have other availability including same-day openings.  Please contact us directly (see below).

  • HOW SOON, AND HOW FAR IN ADVANCE, CAN I BOOK?
Our FullSlate system is currently set to require at least 1 day advance notice, so it shows no available times within 24 hours even though we may have some.
We generally post availability only for the next 2-3 weeks, but would be glad to book you further out.

  • IS THERE A WAIT LIST?
This system currently has no wait list.  If a lesson is already booked at a certain time, that time will display as unavailable.  However, we would be glad take your request and inform you if a booked slot opens up.

  • HOW CAN I CONTACT BICYCLE SOLUTIONS DIRECTLY?
Email: lessons@bicyclesolutions.com. Please include your mobile number (only used if needed for last-minute coordination).
    Text: 415-912-6999 (John)
To ensure that we receive all your information clearly, we prefer email or text, in that order, rather than voice mail.

  • DO I NEED A HELMET?
All students need their own helmet (for hygiene reasons we do not lend them).  You can buy a bike helmet at any bike shop, and at stores such as REI and Sports Basement.  Get one that you (or the student) will enjoy wearing.  All helmets meet the same safety standards; you pay more for style and extra vents.

  • WHAT FORMS OF PAYMENT DO YOU ACCEPT?
We accept cash, or check (payable to "Bicycle Solutions") after your lesson -- this lets us adjust the end time if needed.  We also accept PayPal (to "johnc@bicyclesolutions.com") in advance, however PayPal charges us a merchant fee.  Gift Certificates are purchased in advance via PayPal.

  • I AM BOOKING A LEARN-TO-BIKE LESSON.  DO YOU PROVIDE A BICYCLE TO LEARN ON?
For adult Learn To Bicycle lessons we provide a bicycle.  Please let us know your height so we can bring one that fits you.
For child lessons please contact us -- we have 3 kids' bikes, with 16", 20", and 24" wheels.  We can easily transport these bikes to San Francisco lessons but will only bring them to our other locations if drive (we typically travel by bike or bike+transit rather than driving).  If your child already has a bicycle, please bring it even though you think it may not fit.

Parents, your child's bike seat must be able to be lowered enough that the student can place both feet flat on the ground with knees bent -- "tip-toes" won't work for learning to balance by gliding.  If a reflector is mounted to the seat post below the seat, you may need to remove it in order to lower the seat sufficiently.
